Research & Development | Monza | Headquarters
The main Rottapharm | Madaus R&D Centre is situated within the Monza headquarters.
For over 50 years now, the center deals with the discovery and development of new innovative
medicines in order to satisfy important therapeutical needs but which are not available as
prescription medicines.
The laboratories cover an area of approximately 2,000 m 2, while another 1800 m 2 will be added
to this by 2012 which are currently under construction.
About 130 researchers work in the laboratories; of these, more than 80% have degrees in
biological disciplines and most of them have a Research Doctorate or a PhD.
The main discovery activities are focused on the Medicinal Chemistry department, where predominantly small molecules are synthesized, thanks to innovative computerized molecular design systems, with the aid of high-throughput and biological screening techniques: these are carried out within the Pharmacology and Toxicology department, that deals also with the most advanced biological characterization of compounds and upon which the Molecular Biology unit depends as well as the use of the most modern biotechnologies. Within the Rottapharm | Madaus Research Center, there is the Applied Molecular Biology Laboratory, managed in collaboration with the Department of Neurosciences and Biomedical Technologies of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Studies of Milan Bicocca.
The optimisation and the transition to clinical studies are ensured by the department of
Translational Sciences and Pharmacokinetics. The improvement of the raw materials
is carried out by the
Chemical Development department, while the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
works on the development of the appropriate pharmaceutical forms for oral or injective
administration. These latter processes are guided by rigorous procedures, the correct application
of which is ensured by the
Analytical Control and Quality Assurance departments.
The Clinical Research area consists of three departments:
Clinical Pharmacology & Clinical Research, Biostatistics and Drug Safety. The
clinical studies are carried out all over the world in total compliance with the Good Clinical
Practice guidelines (GCP).
Finally, the exploitation of scientific knowledge within the pharmaceutical field, allows the main Rottapharm | Madaus Research Center to rapidly develop high added value innovative products in terms of effectiveness and tolerability within the field of dietary supplements (nutraceutics) and dermo-cosmetics, the relative co-ordination activities of which are assigned to dedicated departments.
