Utilize the resources available in an efficient way, without wasting, so as to minimize the impact of industrial activities on the environment: this is how R|M’s environmental policy can be summed up, a system of norms and procedures all directed towards eco-efficiency.
Energy saving
Reducing the consumption of energy derived from non-renewable sources (oil, gas, coal) is a
priority for the protection of the planet. Rottapharm|Madaus has long been committed to choosing
highly efficient solutions with low environmental impact for the management of heating, air
conditioning and lighting on its premises with the aim of saving energy. Thanks to a policy
oriented towards eco-compatible solutions, it is thus able to minimize costs and consumption. Some
technical remodeling have recently been carried out in the headquarters of the company and in some
production plants to optimize energy saving and the resulting economic and environmental benefits.
Further remodeling is scheduled for the upcoming years.
Among the remodeling carried out in the headquarters of Monza are
the:
- Installation of photovoltaic solar energy panels to heat buildings and water for sanitary use and for electricity production;
- Utilization of innovative systems of air-conditioning and air treatment which ensure energy saving and a decrease in related expenses.
- Complete remodeling of offices and laboratories, with a new insulation of all buildings to
avoid heat loss; installation of water flux adapters, autonomous thermostat equipment in all the
offices,
high eco-efficiency lighting.
Rottapharm|Madaus Ireland - The energy efficiency projects
The energy efficiency projects were undertaken by Rottapharm Ireland in 2008.
A cross functional group was established within the company to focus on measures that would
lead to reductions in energy usage within the plant.
The target: a 35% reduction in the energy required to produce a unit of product. The
outstanding projects will be completed by the third quarter of 2010.

Monitoring performances
Managing the environmental impact of a company necessarily involves a continuous monitoring
of performances, taking into account environmental costs, energy consumption and the amount of
waste produced. Rottapharm|Madaus is thus committed to the definition of strict guidelines aimed to
increase the efficiency of every activity.
Selective garbage collection
Rottapharm|Madaus is fully aware that conserving resources and minimizing waste production
will not only ensure cost reduction but it is also a fundamental pillar in the respect for the
environment, thus it is promoting among its workers selective garbage collection of waste produced
in its offices, production plants and research laboratories by disposing of the recyclable
materials in their respective recycling bins.
