Consumer Healthcare &
Personal Care Philosophy
Natural ingredients, an innovative, scientific approach, the need to guarantee not only hygiene but also well-being. These are the cornerstones of the Rottapharm' philosophy in personal care, embraced in 1999 with the acquisition of Saugella & Babygella brands.
A dermocosmetic product range based on officinal plant extracts used since the antiquity of medical history, and whose clinical validity is tested according to the same procedures and the same criteria as those applied for medical preparations.
Another distinctive feature is the reduction of all those characteristics (scent, lather, colour) which may be attractive to the consumer but which are not always suitable for maintening the natural physiology of the skin.
All Rottapharm' consumer & personal care products are presented exclusively to doctors and are only distributed through pharmacies, with the aim of spreading, in the most appropriated manner, a culture of hygiene based on daily prevention wich ensures a natural well-being.
In 2000, with the acquisition of Saugella and Babygella brands, Rottapharm entered the personal care sector, gaining the leadership in the market of personal hygiene products sold in pharmacies. At the same time, Rottapharm developed a nutraceutical product line, based on natural ingredients, with food supplements like Estromineral – a phytoaestrogen integrator for menopausal symptoms control – and Armolipid – a food supplement for a natural protection against cardiovascular risks.
With the acquisition of Biochimici PSN (2005), Rottapharm gained the leadership in the pharmacy personal care market in Italy; this agreement represented the ideal enhancement of Rottapharm parapharmaceutical products list and an important opportunity of growth in the dermocosmetic sector.
The company’s production facility is located in Confienza. With technological and human resources able to guarantee the highest levels of efficiency and quality, the plant is at the forefront in the development and production of cosmetics for skin care and personal hygiene.

The nutraceutical market
Worthy of a separate mention is the distribution of glucosamine sulfate in the United State. While in Europe, the preparation must be prescribed by a doctor, in the United States it is deemed to be a dietary supplement, classified among the so-called nutraceuticals and freely sold in the general retail market.
This all derives from the Dietary Supplement Health and Education
Act (DSHEA) of 1994, which ruled that products sold as "dietary
supplements" did not need to be subject to approval by the Food
and Drug Administration.
Consequently, in the United States, glucosamine sulphate is included in the category of alternative therapies.
The Arthritis Foundation's Guide to Alternative Therapies states: "when a supplement has been studied with good results, find out which brand was used in the study, and buy it".
