Rottapharm Group

Rottapharm:

an R&D-driven, multinational company with Italian roots

Rottapharm is a multinational pharmaceutical group based in Italy. The Group was founded in 1961 by professor Luigi Rovati, a pharmacology professor at the University of Pavia, with the creation of Rotta Research Laboratorium as an independent research laboratory. The goal of Rottapharm has always been the discovery, the development and the distribution around the world of new original drugs for the treatment of major diseases. To date the intense research activity has generated over 5000 molecular hits, 287 patents and 19 new drugs; 6 new chemical entities are at an advanced stage of research.

Rottapharm's strategic therapeutical areas are anti-inflammatory- antirheumatic, bone metabolism, menopause, gastrointestinal disorders. Rottapharm was the first pharmaceutical company in Europe to develop and introduce the Estradiol Active Matrix patch for the treatment of menopause.

In the rheumatic field an ambitious research project started years ago for the study of the activity of glucosamine sulfate as a disease modifying drug for osteoarthritis. This project culminated with the publication on The Lancet of the results of a clinical study confirming, for the first time in the world, this activity.
A new study, published in the October 14, 2002 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, confirmed that glucosamine sulfate can modify osteoarthritis when administered
long-term.

The efficacy of glucosamine sulfate in the medium-term management of arthritis symptoms has been confirmed in the European GUIDE (Glucosamine Unum In Die - once a day - Efficacy) Study, presented at the ECCEO Congress in March, 2006.

Among the latest innovative research achievements there is the development of potent and specific cholecystokinin antagonists, which are currently in Phase III studies. These new substances were tested internationally in many research centers in order to define unknown aspects of the Physiopathology of the Gastroenteric Apparatus and of the Central Nervous System. This could lead to new therapeutic strategies in these fields.

In 2000, with the acquisition of Saugella and Babygella brands - Italian market leaders in intimate hygiene and baby care products sold in pharmacy - Rottapharm entered the consumer healthcare market.

In 2005 Rottapharm acquired Biochimici PSN - an Italian company specialised in the development and marketing of dermatological products - gaining the leadership in the personal care market (ranking second in Italy, and sixth in Europe). This operation represented the ideal enhancement of Rottapharm personal care product list, with hair product lines (Biomineral, Biothymus and Aftir), sun protection lines (Dermasol, Carovit), deodorant lines (Dermafresh) and body care lines (Dermoflan, NoAll and Sebamed).

During the last few years, Rottapharm developed a nutraceutical product line, based on natural ingredients, with food supplements like Estromineral (a phytoaestrogen integrator for menopausal symptoms control) and Armolipid (a food supplement for a natural protection against cardiovascular risks). Nutraceutical product list has been enlarged, thanks to the acquisition of Biochimici PSN, with food supplements for hair loss and fragility (Biomineral line) and food supplements for systemic photoprotection to prepare the skin to sun exposure (Carovit line).

In 2007 Rottapharm bought 100% of the German pharmaceutical company Madaus Pharma, with the largest European M&A transaction completed by an Italian pharmaceutical company (M&A Award 2008) .

With this operation, the new Rottapharm Group will be active in over 65 countries worldwide, with more than 2.000 employees, becoming one of the largest pharmaceutical company focused on the development and distribution of natural pharmaceutical products.

In terms of product range, this operation will enable Rottapharm to combine well-known brands such as Dona, Ananase, Epinitril, Estromineral and Saugella & Babygella with 12 new leading brands that include Agiolax, Reparil, Legalon and Ben-U-Ron, thus entering new pharmaceutical segments.

In terms of international expansion, the Rottapharm Group will strengthen its presence in germany, Spain, Portugal (where it is now the first pharmaceutical company) and enter new countries among which Belgium, Austria, South Africa and India.

Besides the scientific research and the development of pharmaceutical products to improve people life, Rottapharm is involved in different social projects:

Art & Culture

Besides supporting art, Rottapharm seeks to encourage the interest in art among children, involving at the same time families and schools in educational initiative. “Babygella - Together discovering Art” is one of the most important Rottapharm project in art; it promotes the discovery of art to children, trying to get families closer to the Italian artistic and cultural heritage. In association with some of the major Italian museums (the National Archeological Museum of Naples, the Milan’s Poldi Pezzoli Museum, and many others), Babygella develops permanent didactical tours and initiatives geared towards children, families and schools.

With its brand Saugella, Rottapharm is the major sponsor of the local volley team, playing in the national second division.
